WBL Board Meeting

December 21, 2005

The meeting was held at Barbara Summers’ home.

In attendance: Barb Summers, Barb Ames, Clyde Kruskal, Dick Wegman, Steve Robinson, Jane Sturgis, Don Berman, Winston Edwards, and non-voting member Donna Rogall.

President Wegman called the meeting to order at approximately 7:30 PM.

Secretary’s Report:

The board approved the minutes, as amended.

Treasurer’s Report:

Steve Robinson reported the following figures:

2005 Revenue :  $25,000

Unit Game Revenue:    $14,000

Tournament Revenue:    $ 7,000

Steve also noted that bills are being sent out for Bulletin advertisements.

The Board approved the treasurer’s report, without objection.

Sectional Tournaments:

Diane Walker has volunteered to produce a daily flyer of results to distribute at the tournament. Winners in categories will receive a prize on Sunday. Winston Edwards volunteered to purchase the prizes for the sectional tournament in January.

Partnership Assistance at Unit Game:

Barb Doran has agreed to be the partnership coordinator for the Unit Game.  Barb Ames will write-up a short advertisement for guaranteed partner volunteers for the Flight B & C game.

We still need a Partnership coordinator for the 2006 Sectional Tournaments. Barb Summers has agreed to cover the March 2006 tournament.

District Six Goodwill Committee:

District 6 has asked for 2 nominees from our Unit to the District Six Goodwill Committee.  These are people who promote goodwill in Bridge.  Barb Summers moved to nominate Steve and Sandy Forsythe, and Clyde Kruskal seconded the motion.  The motion passed unanimously.

Smithsonian Bridge Lessons:

Ron Kral is teaching beginning bridge starting Monday Jan. 23, 2006.

Ron has requested our help in the following areas:

Bridge at Schools:

Dick Wegman will contact Sharon Osborne regarding a $1 million sponsorship available to promote Bridge in Schools and our local efforts. The sponsorship is being offered by Warren Buffet and Bill Gates.

Bridge and Bowling:

Fred King is chairing the Feb. 4, 2006 Bridge and Bowling event. Don Berman volunteered to assist.

“Enjoy Playing Bridge” Brochure:

Dick Wegman has been accumulating information to update our brochure. He expects to have this new version completed and printed by the end of 2005.

Many thanks to Winston Edwards and Barb Summers for their help in updating the brochure. Barbara Summers volunteered to mail brochures out to people who request it. Don Berman has posted updated club information on the WBL website.

Obituaries:

The WBL Bulletin will run obituaries for Madge Gallant and Bernie Arret.

Machlin Sportsmanship Award:

Dick Wegman proposed the award selection committee as follows:

    Millard Nachtwey

    Winston Edwards

    Barbara Summers

    Diane Jaworsky

The committee will serve until further notice.  The upcoming WBL Bulletin will discuss the new award in the President’s column.

Unit Game Hospitality:

Kitty Gottfried will be away for 3 weeks. Thanks to these volunteers who will cover the Unit Game by bringing snacks:

WBL Award:

Clyde Kruskal has proposed an amendment to WBL Policies relating to the ability of the WBL Board  to withhold or withdraw an award in the event of a serious conduct & ethics violation.  Clyde Kruskal and Margot Hennings will work together to develop the specific wording.

Free Plays:

Don Berman moved to provide Free Plays to all Sectional Tournaments to the Unit Game Director. Fred King seconded the motion.  The motion was approved unanimously.

Upcoming Board Meetings:

The next WBL Board meeting will take place February 1, 2006 at Clyde Kruskal’s house.  Jane Sturgis will host the March meeting.  The Board thanked Barbara Summers for hosting the December meeting.

Whereupon, the meeting adjourned at 10:00 p.m.
